The Age of (In) Equality?
The contents of a recent piece in the Daily Telegraph entitled The Age of Equality may have led many readers to believe that the swingometer of sexual equality is certainly on the move. The nub of the article was: “Serial drink-driver spared jail because she is a woman” (NB. The word ‘serial’). The lady in question hit two cars – writing off one of them in the process – before crashing into a ditch, where the car burst into flames. Her Honour the Judge said to the defendant “had you been a man it would have been straight down the stairs”. Many may wonder if Her Honour has come to terms with the concept of either ‘equality before the law’ or ‘legal egalitarianism’. In the interests of balance I ought to say something like: It may of course be that Her Honour took other factors into account of which the Daily Telegraph was unaware. However I am not sure I will!
